Europe Insect Repellent Market Size & Outlook, 2022-2030

The increasing risk of mosquito-borne diseases across Europe is a key factor driving the need for insect repellents. Frequent flooding, heat waves, and warmer summers have created favorable breeding conditions for mosquitoes, resulting in the need for improved control and protection methods. A surge in government efforts to implement preventive strategies is also boosting the market.

A 2022 report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) tracked the spread of different species of mosquitoes that can carry and transmit numerous viruses to humans, including dengue and Zika. Some of the major findings of the report are listed below: 

The Aedes albopictus mosquito (known to carry dengue and chikungunya) has established itself in 13 countries in Europe, compared to eight from a decade ago. This implies that the Aedes albopictus mosquito has evolved into a self-sustaining population that continues to reproduce at an alarming rate.

There were 1,133 human cases of West Nile virus and 92 deaths in 2022, the highest since the 2018 peak of roughly 1,548 cases. The majority of cases were in Europe.  Cases were reported in Greece, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Germany, Croatia, France, Austria, Spain, Bulgaria, and Slovakia.  In 2022, 71 cases of locally acquired dengue were reported in mainland Europe alone, which was similar to the total number of cases recorded between 2010 and 2021.
