Medical Tourism Market Dynamics
Driver: High treatment costs in developed economies
In developing countries, high-quality treatment can be availed at a lower cost than in developed countries. Even though the cost of medical treatments in developing countries is minimal, the quality is not compromised due to the availability of resources at relatively lower costs. This factor results in the influx of people to avail health services in these countries. For instance, an Angioplasty procedure costs around USD 55,000 to USD 57,000 for an individual in the U.S., compared to around USD 2,500 to USD 3,500 in Malaysia. People travel from the U.S. and other countries in Europe to Thailand, Singapore, India, and Malaysia for medical treatments, saving about 55-70% of their treatment expenses. In addition, emerging countries such as Malaysia and Thailand are known to have renowned surgeons, which is attracting more than 1 million patients per year for various treatments. The prices of medical treatments in Malaysia are 30-40% lower than in countries such as the U.S., UK, and other European nations. A large population seeks surgeries such as facial aesthetics procedures, dental implants, breast implants, facelifts, and liposuction in these countries.
Driver: Lack of insurance coverage in countries
Most elective surgeries, such as cosmetic surgeries, certain dental surgeries, fertility treatments, and weight loss surgeries, are not covered by insurance companies in the U.S. Limited availability or lack of insurance coverage drives people to seek medical procedures in countries such as Thailand and Malaysia. Cosmetic surgeries in most countries are considered elective, and, therefore, are not covered under medical insurance. This results in interested patients seeking treatment options abroad. Patients can save costs by traveling to places wherein such medical services are provided at lesser costs. For instance, a breast augmentation procedure costs around USD 5,000 to USD 8,000 for an individual in the U.S., compared to around USD 3,000 to USD 4,000 in Malaysia. The cost of IVF treatment in the U.S. is between USD 15,000 and USD 20,000, whereas in Thailand, it is priced between USD 6,200 and USD 12,000. This price difference has led to an increase in medical tourism in Asian countries.
Restraint: Issues concerning follow-ups
A rising number of patients from developed countries are traveling overseas to avail of medical treatments owing to their well-established healthcare infrastructure and low-cost treatments. However, despite successful completion of a surgical procedure, there may be chances of post-surgery complications. For instance, several bariatric procedures use medical devices such as adjustable gastric bands and intra-gastric balloons, which need to be removed after an interval of 6 to 12 months. In such situations, the patient needs to travel to the same country and undergo the required treatment. These follow-up treatments are time-consuming and expensive, which can impede market growth to a certain extent.
