The global distributed cloud market size was valued at USD 13.78 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 21.9% from 2023 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Growing demand by enterprises to process data at its source seamlessly, rising need for an advanced platform that allows organizations to deploy and run complex applications across all edge computing, on-premises, and cloud environments, and increasing focus of companies to gain greater visibility into their multi-cloud infrastructure are some of the key factors driving the market growth.
As governments across the globe are turning cautious in establishing a sovereign cloud to protect their data, distributed cloud vendors will have an opportunity to grow their businesses. For instance, in June 2023, Oracle Corporation introduced Europe Union (EU) Sovereign Cloud, to meet regulatory requirements, complementing hybrid and dedicated cloud strategies within European member states. A number of businesses can now move their regulated, sensitive, or strategic regional data and applications to the cloud, as well as workloads that meet EU guidelines for data privacy and sovereignty requirements, such as general data protection regulation. As customers' hosted data remains within EU member states and cloud regions are operated by EU-based personnel, EU Sovereign Cloud will assist in digital transformation efforts across critical industries such as financial services, healthcare, the public sector, and telecommunications.
Vendors are expanding their edge computing networks by adding them to the distributed cloud. It enables companies to build, deploy, and secure performant workloads that require single-digit millisecond latency and global reach across the compute continuum, from core to edge, more efficiently. For instance, in February 2023, Akamai Technologies, Inc., a distributed cloud provider, launched Akamai Connected Cloud, a distributed edge and cloud platform for cloud computing, security, and content delivery that keeps applications and experiences closer to end users. The company provides distributed cloud services at over 4,100 locations across 134 countries. Akamai identified more than 50 cities in addition to the new core sites. The company plans to provide basic cloud computing services in difficult-to-reach locations currently unserved by traditional cloud providers by setting up distributed sites in the same year. Due to the cloud computing vendor providers are expanding their reach into unserved areas, the market is expected to grow.
The market growth is attributed to the increasing adoption of IoT worldwide. IoT is essential in building smart communication environments such as smart healthcare, smart transportation, smart shopping, and smart homes. Distributed cloud is used by smart devices to reduce latency and to provide real-time interpretation of data. For instance, in November 2022, Equinix, Inc., IT infrastructure provider, expanded its partnership with VMware, Inc., a cloud computing vendor, to provide VMware Cloud on Equinix Metal, a distributed cloud service. The new distributed cloud service would deliver a secure, cost-effective solution to support enterprise applications. VMware Cloud on Equinix Metal will be optimal for various usages such as video analytics, smart cities, game development, retail point of sale (POS), real-time financial market trading, and various use cases using machine learning and IoT inference.
