The animal health team at Grand View Research has estimated and forecasted a trend report of the pet e-commerce platform database for key countries across the globe. The trend report consists of a list of 500 pet E-commerce platforms along with their location, product/service offerings, website links, type of animal species served, and establishment year. It covers all key countries and all kinds of pet products. These countries represent key markets where animal population, expenditure, pet humanization, and the penetration of e-commerce platforms were estimated to be the highest.
The global pet care e-commerce market is expected to reach USD 149.21 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 7.64% over the forecast period, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. This growth can be attributed to the improvement of users' e-commerce experience due to technological advancements and the increasing penetration of these platforms. The increasing reach of e-commerce platforms offers alternatives for customers to purchase pet care products, contributing to market growth.
The global pet care e-commerce industry is witnessing a surge in the number of collaborations and strategic partnerships, which include mergers, acquisitions, and investments, which is creating growth opportunities for the market. For instance, in January 2024, BARK, Inc. announced a retail agreement to sell its new treat offering in approximately 1,300 stores starting in spring 2024, adding to its existing commitments in nearly 2,500 doors nationwide. The partnership aimed to increase the visibility of BARK's consumables and support its strategic growth roadmap.
Several market participants are geographically expanding their existing businesses to gain a greater market share. For instance, in August 2023, Kanine announced its strategic partnership with India’s highly popular e-commerce website, Myntra. This partnership aimed to expand its market geographically and would allow the company to sell its pet products. These steps serve as opportunities for the growing market.
The online pet product market is vast, with Amazon alone offering over 400,000 dog products. As more consumers turn to e-commerce for pet supplies, competition among brands intensifies. Optimizing online performance and sharing of search is crucial, as 60% of add-to-cart actions come from the top four search results. The share of search also varies between dog and cat food for some brands. Hill's Pet Nutrition, for instance, has a 39% share of a search for dog food, compared to 35% for cat food. Smaller brands like Stella & Chewy’s, JustFoodForDogs, Tiki Pets, VICTOR Super Premium Pet Food, and Open Farm are increasing their visibility by using trending keywords such as ‘grain-free’, ‘low fat’, and ‘diabetic’ in their product description pages (PDPs).
Going online allows brands to reach a broader market. Amazon and Chewy have leveraged this by building a brand story and value proposition focused on top-notch customer service and the convenience of auto-ship, enhancing online sales. With its private-label pet food brand, Wag, Amazon captures 59% of the online market share. According to the US Pet Market Outlook by Packaged Facts, Amazon leads the online pet market, followed by Chewy (41%), Walmart (33%), PetSmart, and PETCO. The pet supplies category on Amazon generates over $800 million in annual revenue. While dog and cat products are the most commonly purchased, Amazon also caters to other pet needs.
Pet supplies and pet food are the second and third-largest e-commerce consumer packaged goods (CPG) categories in the pet industry. Between 2021 and 2022, online pet food sales in the US grew by 16.4%, compared to a 3.7% growth in brick-and-mortar stores during the same period. While retail stores experienced a steady rise in pet spending, the American online pet market has quadrupled in size since 2013. With pet ownership rates increasing, retailers and entrepreneurs are focusing on e-commerce to reach new audiences and markets. Customer preference for purchasing pet products online is expected to grow at 9.4%, building on the existing 13% market share. Major brands like PetFlow, Petco, and Chewy offer aggressive discounts, whereas Amazon, PetSmart, and Pet Supplies Plus adopt a more conservative pricing strategy. The year 2022 saw significant increases in these discounts due to rising competition in the e-commerce sector.
