Report Overview
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have an expansive veterinary industry with a focus on preserving animal health, ensuring food safety, and supporting the agricultural and pet care sectors. Several veterinary hospitals and clinics operate in these countries, providing a wide range of services for both livestock and companion animals. These facilities offer services such as diagnostic testing, surgery, preventive care, and grooming for pets, as well as medical care for livestock animals.
The UAE has a growing number of veterinary hospitals and clinics compared to other GCC countries due to the increasing number of licensed veterinarians, which stood at 1,200 in 2022. Many clinics and hospitals in the UAE feature state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained veterinarians who aim to deliver exceptional care to animals and their owners. Currently, around 434 clinics and 1366 specialized veterinary pharmacies in Saudi Arabia are dedicated to meeting pets' unique needs. Small cities in Saudi Arabia have fewer veterinary clinics and hospitals than larger metropolitan areas due to lower population density, less economic activity, and limited demand for veterinary services, among other factors.
Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain have fewer veterinary hospitals and clinics due to lower population density, and limited demand for veterinary services in these areas may contribute to the lower number of veterinary hospitals and clinics. However, the situation is changing with the implementation of initiatives like the Saudi Vision 2030, which supports the establishment of veterinary clinics through various programs and funding options. For instance, the Kafalah Program offers loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) looking to invest in the pet sector, making it easier for entrepreneurs to launch veterinary practices. Despite these efforts, rural and smaller towns are experiencing a relative scarcity of veterinary services compared to large cities like Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam.
