The global vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty needles market size was valued at USD 760.0 million in 2019 and is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4% from 2020 to 2027. An increase in the prevalence of spinal injuries due to vehicle accidents and sports injury is anticipated to fuel market growth. In addition, the growth in the aging population suffering from osteoporosis is also supporting the growth of the market for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty needles.
As per the statistics by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures globally. One common sign of osteoporosis is a vertebral compression fracture, that affects around 7,50,000 individuals in the U.S. every year, majorly women. Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures can lead to severe deformity and immobility related complications. However, patients with intractable pain refractory to conservative management may go for vertebral augmentation procedures.
The obese and geriatric populations are more prone to osteoporosis, which is the main cause of spinal or vertebral fractures. As per the data published by the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), osteoporosis and low bone mass affect around 54.0 million old people in the U.S. The major sources of community health care costs and morbidity from osteoporosis are associated with fractures. Of these, vertebral compression fractures account for one-quarter of osteoporotic fractures.
Most VCFs gets cured with conservative treatment such as medications for pain, bed rest, and braces. However, the significant number of patients with VCF that do not resolve and improve continue to report chronic pain. VCFs, if untreated can lead to severe clinical consequences and impose a significant impact on the quality of patient’s life as well as on caregivers. As non-surgical treatment of these fractures has limited effectiveness, there is an increase in the demand for vertebral augmentation procedures to control pain and stabilize the fracture.
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are commonly used procedures to treat these fractures. The procedure involves the injection of acrylic cement in the fractured bone with (kyphoplasty) or without balloon (vertebroplasty). Both vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty procedures are performed under local anesthesia and either CT or fluoroscopic guidance. However, there are certain complications associated with including cement leakage and fracture of adjacent bone.
The kyphoplasty procedures segment accounted for the largest revenue share of 61.0% in 2019. It is also anticipated to witness the fastest CAGR of 5.6% in the vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty needles market over the forecast period. Kyphoplasty procedures are the advanced version of vertebroplasty and involve inserting a balloon in the damaged vertebra followed by inflation of a balloon to create a cavity within the bone to fill cement. The role of the balloon here is to help compress the fracture fragments together as the cavity is created.
Vertebroplasty, on the other hand, involves injecting cement directly in the fractured bone without using a balloon. Both vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty procedures are minimally invasive and are performed to treat the vertebral compression fractures in the spine. The procedure helps in stabilizing the fractured bone and also aims at reducing the deformity in the bone along with restoring vertebral height.
The procedures are commonly performed in the aged population suffering from osteoporosis which can lead to vascular malformations or less common cancer fractures in the vertebra. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty help patients regain their functional abilities and avoid further vertebral collapse.
The hospital segment accounted for the largest market share of 61.4% in 2019. Hospital is a more promising segment due to better infrastructure facilities in developed economies. Also, the vertebral compression fractures are responsible for around 70, 000 hospitalizations annually in U.S., which is supporting the growth of the market for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty needles.
The segment of ambulatory surgical centers is anticipated to witness the fastest CAGR of 5.6% in the market for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty needles over the forecast period. This is attributed to the low-cost advantage associated with the ASCs. The surgeries do not require hospital admission and hence provide cost-effective means for the patients undergoing vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.
North America dominated the market and accounted for over a 35.6% share of global revenue in 2019. This is attributed to the increase in the prevalence of osteoporosis along with the high demand for minimally invasive surgery to treat VCFs in this region. Europe followed North America in terms of market share accounting for 28.6% in 2019. Vertebral compression fracture due to osteoporosis is significant health in with over 1,400,000 vertebral fractures occurring annually in Europe. Hence, kyphoplasty is the most preferred method to restore vertebral height and stabilize the fracture, thereby boosting the growth of the market for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty needles.
Mergers and acquisitions, as well as new product launches are key strategic initiatives undertaken by the market players. For instance, in January 2020, Merit Medical Systems announced the launch of Arcadia Steerable and Straight Balloons for vertebral augmentation. This product launch will help Merit Medical Systems to increase its sales in other countries. Some of the prominent players in the vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty needles market include:
Stryker Corporation
Medtronic
IZI Medical Products
Globus Medical, Inc.
Biopsybell
Laurane Medical
Teknimed
Merit Medical Systems, Inc.
Zavation
