Market Segmentation
According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), in 2020 approximately 102,407 invasive and 52,140 noninvasive aesthetic surgeries were completed in Thailand. Moreover, ISAPS also reported that Thailand witnessed the highest (33.2%) proportion of foreign patients seeking aesthetic treatment, followed by Mexico (22.5%) and Turkey (19.2%). Rising government initiatives and the development of state-of-the-art medical facilities to perform aesthetic procedures have led to increased awareness and adoption of cosmetic procedures in the country.
According to a 2021 IPSOS article, a public opinion specialist company, a large majority of Thailand’s population approves of cosmetic surgery as a means to efficiently enhance one’s physical appearance. The survey conducted by IPSOS on more than 500 people over the age of 18 in Thailand, reported that over two-thirds of the surveyed population was confident in their physical appearance, however, 87% of the people perceive cosmetic treatments in a positive light. This is because there is growing influence from social media platforms, which has also added to growing dissatisfaction with appearance among people in the country.
Thailand is currently ranked second in Asia for having robust healthcare facilities capable of treating the sick and ranked third in the prevention of the emergence of pathogens by Johns Hopkins University. The geriatric population in Thailand is growing, which indicates that the life expectancy of the people in the country has increased over the years owing to its robust healthcare infrastructure. This is contributing to the increasing life expectancy in the country.
As reversing signs of aging is a major factor influencing the adoption of aesthetic procedures, Thailand’s aesthetic medicine market is expected to witness growth. However, the adoption of aesthetic procedures by people living in Thailand is relatively low compared to foreign patients visiting the country. However, rising social media influence and improving accessibility of equipped healthcare facilities are expected to increase the demand for aesthetic treatment.
According to ISAPS, the estimated number of plastic surgeons in Thailand was 420 in 2019, accounting for only 0.8% of the global pool of plastic surgeons. The country lags far behind other Asian countries such as China, Japan, India, and South Korea. This is because the trend of cosmetic surgery increased only in the past 10 years in the country. However, with increasing medical tourism; the adoption of newer, more advanced technology; and a growing number of facilities with international accreditation, the number of plastic surgeons is also increasing. The table below depicts the year-on-year growth of several plastic surgeons from 2017 to 2019. Increasing demand for aesthetic procedures globally has led to increased medical tourism in Thailand, which is expected to boost the number of aesthetic professionals in the country.
