The global cleft lip surgery market size was valued at USD 408.4 million in 2021 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.0% from 2022 to 2030. The rising incidence of a defect in fetal development, growing awareness about cleft lip surgery in developing countries, and rising disposable income are key drivers responsible for the lucrative market growth. Cleft lip surgery has evolved over a short duration of time with the help of research on various techniques. The rising population in countries, such as China and India, and the increased availability of doctors and services in such countries are expected to fuel the growth of this market.
In addition, there has been an increase in the mandates to cover cleft lip surgery in the insurance policies, which is making people opt for the surgery, thereby supporting the market growth. The advent of COVID-19 affected the procedural volume of cleft lip surgery as these surgical procedures are carried out on infants and their risk of getting affected by the virus was high. However, cleft lip and palate surgery requires early interdisciplinary attention many hospitals resumed the services by the end of 2020. As per the Centers for Disease Control, one in every 1,600 babies is born with cleft lip with cleft palate in the U.S., and around one in every 2,800 babies is born with cleft lip without cleft palate.
Cleft lip defect with or without palate is a very common deformity in newborns. This defect occurs when the tissues that make up the lips and palate do not fully integrate into intrauterine life. The actual cause of cleft lip and palate has yet to be discovered. However, in some cases, it can be associated with environmental issues or genetic issues. The main objective of the surgery is to improve physical appearance and the ability to speak, hear, and eat. Various treatment options are available to help and manage the condition, depending on the severity, needs, and age of the child. However, the main treatment option is surgery. A series of surgeries are performed to correct the cleft lip and cleft palate.
Usually, surgery to repair a cleft lip is done within 3-6 months of birth, and surgery to repair a cleft palate is done before 18 months of age. If necessary, some follow-up surgeries may be performed in infancy (2 years of age) through adolescence to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose and lips. According to a report, the overall incidence of cleft lip and cleft palate is approximately 1 in 600-800 live births (1.42 in 1000), and isolated cleft palate occurs in approximately 1 in 2000 live births. To overcome these deformities, there are two types of surgeries performed: cleft lip without palate surgery and cleft lip with palate surgery. Out of which, cleft lip with palate surgery dominated the cleft lip surgery market in 2021. As many infants are born with this deformity.
These surgeries are mostly performed in hospitals and specialty clinics. The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the market as global restrictions and lockdown were imposed in the majority of countries during the initial period. All elective surgeries were stopped and only trauma and emergency surgeries were given priority. The number of doctors visiting the hospitals was reduced as they had to visit the COVID care centers. According to the American Society’s Plastic Surgeons’ Plastic Surgery Statistical report-2020, “Average length of time Board-Certified physicians reported they stopped performing surgical procedures in 2020 due to COVID-19 is 8.1 weeks.” However, the services for the treatment resumed by the end of 2020.
On the basis of types, the global market has been further categorized into cleft lip without cleft palate and cleft lip with cleft palate. The cleft lip surgery with palate segment dominated the market in 2021 and accounted for the largest share of more than 71.5% of the global revenue. The segment is expected to grow substantially during the forecast period. During pregnancy, when the tissues that make up the lip and palate do not close properly, it causes cleft lip and palate. In the case of cleft lip surgery with a palate, a procedure is performed to close the space between the hard palate and soft palate i.e., the roof of the mouth, and rebuild them.
The incisions are made on both the sides of the cleft and then the tissue and muscles are repositioned. Many infants are born with this deformity due to the implication of environmental teratogens and genetic factors in the development of cleft lip and palate. Intrauterine exposure to the anticonvulsant phenytoin is associated with a 10-fold increase in the incidence of cleft lip. Maternal smoking during pregnancy doubles the incidence of cleft lip. AS per the CDC, in 2020, in the U.S., one in eight women is a smoker and 12.2% of the women smoked cigarettes as compared to 15.9% of men. All these factors increase the prevalence of cleft lip or cleft lip with a palate and are boosting the market growth.
On the basis of end-uses, the global market has been segmented into hospitals and specialty clinics. The hospital segment accounted for the largest share of more than 71.00% of the global revenue in 2021. This can be attributed to the increasing availability of doctors & surgeons in hospitals, the rising number of hospitals performing such surgeries, growing healthcare market in developing countries like India and China. For instance, according to the IBEF report on the Indian Healthcare sector, “FDI inflows in sectors, such as hospitals and diagnostic centers and medical and surgical appliances stood at USD 7.73 billion and USD 2.35 billion, respectively.
The rising number of various multi-specialty hospitals having different departments under one roof has made it easy for the parents of newborns to easily consult the doctors and get the required services under the same roof. Surgeons prefer associating with hospitals rather than opening their specialty clinics as they can visit many hospitals on call and increase their patient portfolio. On account of the aforementioned factors, the hospital segment is expected to retain its dominant position throughout the forecast period.
On the basis of geographies, the global market has been segmented into Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, and Middle East & Africa. The Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2021 and accounted for a share of 56.0% of the overall revenue. The region is anticipated to retain its dominant position throughout the forecast years expanding at the fastest growth rate on account of the rising population and increasing healthcare facilities in this region. The population in Asian countries is expected to lead to an increase in the incidence of cleft lip and palate in this region.
For instance, according to The World Health Organization, Asia has 28 countries with more than 10 million people - and over 20 cities with more than 10 million people. By 2050, the population of Asia will be about the size of the total world population in 1990: 5.3 billion. The increasing rates of hospitals, surgeons, insurance service access, and growing awareness about cleft lip surgery are expected to drive the market growth. Latin America is also expected to grow significantly during the forecast period due to the rising incidence of risk factors like smoking cigarettes, high alcohol intake, etc. among women.
The key companies are concentrating on strategic initiatives, such as mergers and acquisitions, geographical expansions, increasing brand recognition, providing quality services, and expanding service locations. For instance, in November 2019, Apollo Hospitals Group came into partnership with the Asian Society for Emergency Medicine for the Annual Conference of Society for Emergency Medicine, and 2,000 emergency medicine experts from over 32 countries participated in the conference.
