Why will Gen AI Smartphone Stay at the Helm?

Posted On Feb, 20, 2025

California, February 20, 2025: Apple on Wednesday introduced an affordable version of iPhone 16—iPhone 16e—seen by tech pundits as a strategic move to stay at the helm in the budget smartphone market. The iPhone 16e, priced at $599, could be a defining moment to put the company’s Apple Intelligence in the hands of more consumers. The affordable iPhone will be available beginning Friday, February 28.

The souped-up version comes against the backdrop of tough competition faced by the American behemoth from Samsung and Google, who have emphasized updating Android devices with advanced and new AI features.

This could mark the beginning of what could be a promising journey in the generative AI smartphone market. For the record, the ChatGPT wave brought a tectonic shift in the technology landscape, compelling smartphone companies to incorporate generative AI into their products.

The new 5G modem is the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone, infers Apple. Taking stock of the news, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing Kaiann Drance, exhorted that the iPhone 16e has “breakthrough battery life,” an innovative 2-in-1 camera system and a fast performance powered by the latest-generation A18 chip.

Dubbed ‘built to last,’ the cheapest AI-supported iPhone has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology with both USB-C and wireless charging. The AI feature automatically summarizes audio and text and creates an emoji with Genmoji.

Users can reportedly choose to access the repertoire of ChatGPT without jumping between smartphone applications, and they will allegedly be in full control of what information is shared with ChatGPT and when it is used.

For the unversed, Apple launched its first set of Apple Intelligence features for iPhone, iPad and Mac users in October 2024 as free software updates with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. The industry for the smartphone operating system has received a major boost following the availability of AI on the iPhone 16 family, 2023’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and specific iPads and Macs.
