According to the UN, the proportion of people aged 60 or above in India is projected to increase to nearly 20% of the population, and it has been estimated that there will be more people aged above 60 than those below 15 by 2050. The majority of the elderly population resides in rural areas. According to research conducted by the India Journal of Dental Research, dental caries affected 76.4% of the surveyed population.
Oral diseases have also been linked to bacterial endocarditis, atherosclerosis, chronic obstructive lung diseases, and preterm low birth weight. Periodontal health has a direct link with diabetes. This proves that majority of the Indian population is in need for preventive and restorative dental treatments. According to the Journal of Dental Research, 52.8% of the surveyed population had been to a dentist in the past 1 year, and maximum visits were by people aged 65–74 years, 43.5% of participants responded that receiving oral healthcare was “important only when in pain,” and about 66.9% participants felt “cost” was the main barrier restricting them from visiting a dentist.
According to the data from Dental Council of India, 72% of the population living in villages was deprived of dental care. However, the Indian government has introduced initiative to tackle the dental disease burden in the country, therefore Ministry of Health and Family Welfare introduced the National Oral Health Program [NOHP] in 2019, for affordable, accessible and equitable oral health care delivery in a well- coordinated manner for bringing about optimal oral health for all Indian citizens.
