Uruguay’s regulations for recreational use of cannabis involves issuing licenses required to plant, cultivate, harvest, produce, and commercialize cannabis. This license authorizes self-cultivation of cannabis for personal use, cannabis clubs, or for pharmacies.
For home-grown cannabis, people can grow not more than six female flowering cannabis plants per household, for personal consumption. However, the cultivation of more than six cannabis plants are allowed, if these surplus plants are either male or nonflowering. The total annual production of the drug should not exceed 480 g.
For cannabis clubs, the clubs must first be registered with the Institute for the Regulation and Control of Cannabis (IRCCA) and other authorities. They can only have 15 to 45 members. The clubs are authorized to plant 99 cannabis plants in the same place but cannot dispense more than 480 g of cannabis to each of its members. Surplus produce should be handed over to the authorities.
