The German government legalized cannabis in 2017 and established the National Cannabis Agency as a part of German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). The government started a tender process where cannabis companies could apply for a cultivation license.
On 18 July 2018, BfArM’s cannabis agency established a new one-step application process, in which applicants of the first tender process could use their previous documentation. BfArM changed the precondition for application: the older need for a referral from experts was changed to requiring experience in growing and processing medicinal plants.
The National Cannabis Agency further increased the quantity of cannabis that could be cultivated annually, from 1,000 kg per year to 2,600 kg per year. The new law expands access to cannabis and favors its domestic production.
