Burn injuries and deaths pose a serious public health challenge in the Indian healthcare industry. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) estimates, annually 7 million individuals in India suffer from burn injuries and 0.14 million succumb to burn injuries and 0.24 million suffer from disabilities. The high prevalence of burn accidents in India is due to low-level safety consciousness, poverty, and illiteracy.
In addition, the lack of organized burn care centers at primary and secondary healthcare centers is further worsening the prevalence. To address these issues, Indian government bodies have introduced The National Programme for Prevention of Burn Injuries (NPPBI) to prevent burn accidents, develop burn care infrastructure, and train healthcare professionals. Furthermore, the NPPBI is focusing on developing a central burn registry and the program will be divided into three segments: burn injury management program; preventive program; and burn injury rehabilitation program.
Moreover, the NPPBI is expected to promote participation of other government bodies, non government organizations, and private players to improve burn care management. For instance, the Indian Burns Research Society formed and promoted the National Burns Center to manage burn care projects holistically and to innovate treatment methods while offering cost-effective care solutions. There are 67 burn care centers in India out of which 38 are privately operated and 29 are managed by the government.
